Full Review:

Shaker Hills is a very nice course cut out of rolling hills and forest. The course itself is well maintained with a number of very challenging and beautiful golf holes. Located further west than some of the Stow courses, Shaker is still a quicker drive because of its proximity to Route 2 and 495. Shaker Hills is a very good but pricey golf course with a reasonable drive time from Boston.

The Good

  • Good looking country club style course with mature trees and well manicured fairways
  • Rangers placed on holes with blind drives to help find balls
  • Greens fees include use of the driving range
  • Range use included with greens fees
  • Many interesting holes with elevation changes and shot choices
  • Great hot dogs at the turn

The Bad

  • The course does get crowded on the weekends and the number of holes with lost ball trouble means that there can be some serious delays
  • Price
  • Drainage was an issue on the day we played. Drives on 12 plugged in the fairway and most fairways were not giving any role.
  • Number 5 can be a bit demoralizing for shorter hitters.
  • As with any course with thick mature trees, grass near the tree line can be sparse and make it easier for errant shots to run into the woods.
  • Our group found the roll of the greens to be somewhat inconsistent. This may be due to different levels of shade on the greens, but it did lead to some very bad lag putts.

Other Notes

  • The girl who cleaned our clubs after the round neglected to put a headcover back on necessitating a separate drive to retrieve it.
  • Number 12 is the hole that make the purchase of a yardage book worthwhile
