Full Review:
Ponkapoag is dirt cheap. I knew that before I got there, but when you play 18 holes (weekday) and the cost is $22, you feel like you're getting a pretty great deal. Unfortunately, the course can leave you wondering if that was a good or bad deal. It was in the worst condition of any course reviewed. Admittedly, we have had lots of rain lately, but Ponkapoags neighbors like Brook Meadow have done a much better job managing the damage. If you're looking to simply play golf but not necessarily see a great course, Ponkapoag will let you do it for next to nothing.
The Good
- Super cheap. Dirt Cheap. Inexpensive. However you say it, Ponkapoag will not cost you much.
- 36 holes and driving range
- Close to 93
- Real local color: the folks working there have probably been there longer than you've been alive.
The Bad
- You get what you pay for: the course suffers from poor maintenance, bad drainage and greens with dead patches. When I played it had been a week since any rain more than a sprinkle. There was standing water that the course might want to make into a hazard since it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
- Some good holes are surrounded by a number of odd or strange holes. My personal favorite is the OB on the interior of the course on number 9 of course 2.
- No yardage markers on par 3's. This is despite the fact that some of the tees are 20 yards deep. I've said it before (yadda yadda) give me a number in the ground that I can pace yardages from. That's not too much is it?
- I managed to play through them, but there were some *extremely slow* foursomes out there. I counted shots for the whole group on number 2 and stopped after I got to 40 (!).
Other Notes
- When you're driving to the course, it is right at the intersection of Washington and Turnpike. If you bear right on Washington or end up on Turnpike, you've gone too far.
