Full Review:
The Brookline Club borders its famous neighbor The Country Club. While sharing similar land and long histories, the comparisons to the Country Club end there. Brookline Club is a good public course. It is decently maintained and fairly inexpensive with a few interesting holes. Built upon a bog, the course tends to have trouble draining after rains. If you live nearby, its worth checking out for a round.
The Good
- Some interesting and challenging holes with some strong doglegs and decent risk reward tradeoffs.
- Reasonably priced for being so close to Boston.
- Many wide fairways keep the pace of play faster than most publinks out there.
The Bad
- Poor drainage on the course makes playing after a rain a muddy experience. Wear your old golf shoes because many parts of the course get a bit squishy underfoot. Number 9 can be underwater for weeks at a time.
- Some areas of the course have gone back to nature with strange ungolfable growths of plants near holes. The greens do roll well, but all of the other maintenance seems to be done at the lowest expense possible.
Other Notes
- Number 10 doesn't need much club off the tee. Hit it to the corner (approximately 180 yards) and you'll have a short approach shot to get home.
- A big drive on number 14 can cut the corner, but aiming any further right than the corner is asking for trouble.
- Number 15 has a massively sloped green. Stay below the hole on approach shot or risk a four-putt.
