Full Review:
George Wright is designed by Donald Ross, one of the most respected and prolific of golf course architects in American golf. You can still see that influence today. The course has many holes with undulation, blind tee shots and fair risk rewards that give a golfer choices. Number three reminds me of number 11 at Oakland Hills (Ryder Cup and US Open host). With all that said, George Wright is a municipal course with much to be desired in terms of maintenance. It is also pretty cheap so if your willing to have a good test with some rough edges at a discount price, George Wright fits the bill.
The Good
- Challenging Donald Ross design still retains the signature features of the celebrated designer
- The greens role well even when other areas of the course suffer
- Cheap on weekdays and for Boston residents
The Bad
- Maintenance is lacking: when I played the course rains from several days earlier had left significant standing water on the course, the rough was overgrown in many places (not a course feature) and bare patches could be found on the fairways and all over the rough.
- Getting there is a challenge. If you live close, you're lucky. If you don't print out the directions and keep the map with you. I used Google Maps for directions and my turn from American Legion Hwy to Canterbury was a bit confused because Canterbury crosses ALH twice. The course's sign on the street was also missing, but I pulled into the parking lot after seeing a golf bag on someone's back. Overall, give yourself some extra time if this is your first trip to the course.
- As with many munis, pace of play can be an issue. The locals say that 5+ hours is the norm for a round.
