Full Review:

Newton Commie is just what you'd think it is: a low priced muni course that is in decent shape but lacks many of the features available at nicer courses. You might not expect some of the holes though. There are definitely some interesting/strange shots on the course. If you're in the mood for a cheap round and some non-traditional holes, Newton Commie is a decent choice.

The Good

  • Cheap and even cheaper for students and Newton residents
  • Some very cool elevated tees on #6 and #18
  • Friendly staff
  • Low pressure environment -- hackers welcome

The Bad

  • Weird holes: #3 has a drving range mat for a tee, #4 almost forces you to drive off the fairway from the back tees, #5 is protected from errant shots on #4 by a giant screen, #16 includes a tee shot over the mowing equipment and broken down carts, #18 forbids the use of woods off the tee
  • Some maintenance problems and rough greens
  • Hackers welcome can be a plus and minus. I hack, but I've been behind hackers that need read their puts from high and low. It can take a while to get around on the weekend
