Full Review:
I've played Butternut a bunch of times now. I like the course in general but for my money I now prefer to golf at its neighbor, Stow Acres. Butternut is cut through the woods and is well maintained. The problem is that the holes in the center of the course are a bit narrow and squashed together. The result is that some of the tree lined fairways feel like hallways from the tee. Lots of balls cross to other fairways and generally slow down the pace of play. I've played a five and a half hour round there. With drive time and warm up time, that can mean over 8 hours door-to-door to play a round of golf. It's a bit much for me.
The Good
- Good looking course cut through the Stow forests
- Number 8 is the ultimate risk reward hole. You can give yourself an eagle put on this green, but going for it and missing means you're wet.
- New clubhouse facilities
- Very walkable
The Bad
- Slow paces of play due to ball searches on narrow fairway holes
- Has a better neighbor at a similar price
